The Sociology of Food: Eating, Diet and Culture, co-authored with Anne Murcott and Anneke van Otterloo (London: Sage, 1993) was originally commissioned as the first comprehensive review essay on the new and fast-growing are of research on the sociology of food, to appear as issue of the International Sociological Associations journal Current Sociology [40 (2) 1992], but it was subsequently issued as a book.
